OCCOG has been notified of the resignation of Steve Hwangbo from his position as SCAG District 18 (Cypress, La Palma, Garden Grove) representative and OCCOG Board member. Consequently, OCCOG is holding a special election to appoint a replacement to complete the term, which ends in May 2017. A deadline of  5 PM Friday December 8, 2017 was established to accept nominations. Any elected city council member in the SCAG 18 District may apply. Two nominations were received by the deadline: Councilmember Stacy Berry of Cypress and Councilmember Kim Nguyen of Garden Grove each expressed interest in the position. Since more than one nominee was received, elections will be held January 25, 2018 at Irvine City Hall, immediately prior to the regularly-scheduled OCCOG Board meeting.  All council members in the District 18 cities of Cypress, Garden Grove and La Palma are eligible to vote. A majority of the council members present for each respective district selects the successful candidate. Once the successful candidate is selected, her term will begin immediately and will end in May 2018.  The regular election for District 18 will be held April 26, 2018.
